अगर आप English बोलते समय यह बताना चाहते हैं कि कोई काम Past में किसी समय से लगातार चल रहा था, तो Past Perfect Continuous Tense का इस्तेमाल किया जाता है।

Past Perfect Continuous Tense क्या है?

Past Perfect Continuous Tense का इस्तेमाल तब किया जाता है जब Past में कोई काम एक निश्चित समय से लगातार चल रहा था, और हम उसकी duration (कितने समय से) पर focus करना चाहते हैं।

आसान भाषा में:

अगर कोई काम Past में शुरू हुआ था और Past के किसी दूसरे point तक लगातार चलता रहा था, तो हम Past Perfect Continuous का इस्तेमाल कर सकते हैं।

Example:

I had been studying for two hours before you called me.

मैं तुम्हारे call करने से पहले दो घंटे से पढ़ रहा था।

यहाँ:

Studying Past में शुरू हुआ।
दो घंटे तक चलता रहा।
फिर दूसरा Past event हुआ — you called me.

इसलिए यहाँ Past Perfect Continuous का use हुआ है।

Past Perfect Continuous Tense की पहचान कैसे करें?

Hindi में ऐसे sentences में अक्सर ये expressions मिलते हैं:

से … रहा था
से … रही थी
से … रहे थे
इतने समय से … रहा था
दो घंटे से … कर रहा था
सुबह से … कर रही थी
कई दिनों से … कर रहे थे

Examples:

मैं दो घंटे से पढ़ रहा था।
I had been studying for two hours.

वह सुबह से काम कर रही थी।
She had been working since morning.

वे कई दिनों से तैयारी कर रहे थे।
They had been preparing for several days.

Past Perfect Continuous Tense का Structure

इस Tense का सबसे important formula है:

Positive Sentences

Subject + had been + V1 + ing + Object + Time

Examples:

I had been working for three hours.
मैं तीन घंटे से काम कर रहा था।

She had been studying since morning.
वह सुबह से पढ़ रही थी।

They had been waiting for an hour.
वे एक घंटे से इंतज़ार कर रहे थे।

Had Been का इस्तेमाल

Past Perfect Continuous में सभी Subjects के साथ had been का ही इस्तेमाल होता है।

चाहे Subject हो:

I
You
We
They
He
She
It

हर जगह:

Had been + V-ing

Examples:

I had been waiting.

He had been working.

She had been studying.

They had been playing.

यहाँ has been / have been नहीं लगेगा क्योंकि हम Past की बात कर रहे हैं।

For और Since का इस्तेमाल

Past Perfect Continuous में For और Since बहुत important हैं।

For

For का इस्तेमाल duration बताने के लिए किया जाता है।

यानी कितने समय से?

Examples:

for two hours — दो घंटे से
for three days — तीन दिनों से
for five years — पाँच साल से
for a long time — लंबे समय से

Example:

I had been studying for two hours.

मैं दो घंटे से पढ़ रहा था।

Since

Since का इस्तेमाल starting point बताने के लिए किया जाता है।

यानी कब से?

Examples:

since morning — सुबह से
since Monday — सोमवार से
since 2020 — 2020 से
since 5 o’clock — पाँच बजे से

Example:

She had been working since morning.

वह सुबह से काम कर रही थी।

याद रखने की आसान Trick:

For = कितने समय से?
Since = कब से?

Negative Sentences in Past Perfect Continuous

Negative sentence बनाने के लिए had not been का इस्तेमाल करते हैं।

Structure:

Subject + had not been + V1-ing + Object + Time

Examples:

I had not been sleeping for two hours.

मैं दो घंटे से नहीं सो रहा था।

She had not been working since morning.

वह सुबह से काम नहीं कर रही थी।

They had not been waiting for long.

वे ज्यादा देर से इंतज़ार नहीं कर रहे थे।

Short Form:

Had not = Hadn’t

I hadn’t been sleeping.

She hadn’t been working.

They hadn’t been waiting.

Questions in Past Perfect Continuous

जब हमें question पूछना हो, तो Had को sentence की शुरुआत में लाते हैं।

Structure:

Had + Subject + been + V1-ing + Object + Time?

Examples:

Had you been studying for two hours?

क्या तुम दो घंटे से पढ़ रहे थे?

Had she been working since morning?

क्या वह सुबह से काम कर रही थी?

Had they been waiting for long?

क्या वे काफी देर से इंतज़ार कर रहे थे?

WH-Questions in Past Perfect Continuous

जब question What, Why, Where, How long, Who आदि से शुरू हो, तो:

Structure:

WH-word + had + Subject + been + V1-ing…?

Examples:

What had you been doing?

तुम क्या कर रहे थे?

Why had she been crying?

वह क्यों रो रही थी?

Where had they been going?

वे कहाँ जा रहे थे?

सबसे useful question:

How long had you been…?

How long had you been studying?

तुम कितने समय से पढ़ रहे थे?

How long had you been waiting?

तुम कितनी देर से इंतज़ार कर रहे थे?

Past Perfect Continuous with Before

Past Perfect Continuous को अक्सर before के साथ इस्तेमाल किया जाता है, जब हम बताते हैं कि कोई activity दूसरे Past event से पहले कुछ समय से चल रही थी।

Example:

I had been studying for two hours before you called me.

तुम्हारे call करने से पहले मैं दो घंटे से पढ़ रहा था।

She had been working for five hours before she took a break.

Break लेने से पहले वह पाँच घंटे से काम कर रही थी।

They had been waiting for an hour before the bus arrived.

Bus आने से पहले वे एक घंटे से इंतज़ार कर रहे थे।

यहाँ एक चीज़ notice कीजिए:

पहले से चल रही activity → Past Perfect Continuous

बाद में हुआ event → Past Simple

Past Perfect Continuous with By the Time

By the time का मतलब होता है:

जब तक / जिस समय तक

Example:

By the time I arrived, they had been waiting for thirty minutes.

जब तक मैं पहुँचा, वे तीस मिनट से इंतज़ार कर रहे थे।

By the time the teacher came, the students had been discussing the topic for ten minutes.

जब तक teacher आए, students दस मिनट से topic पर discussion कर रहे थे।

यहाँ हमारा focus इस बात पर है कि activity कितने समय से चल रही थी।

Past Perfect और Past Perfect Continuous में अंतर

यह difference समझना बहुत important है।

Past Perfect:

I had finished my work before he arrived.

वह आने से पहले मैं अपना काम पूरा कर चुका था।

यहाँ focus है:

👉 काम पूरा हो चुका था।

Past Perfect Continuous:

I had been working for two hours before he arrived.

वह आने से पहले मैं दो घंटे से काम कर रहा था।

यहाँ focus है:

👉 काम कितने समय से चल रहा था।

आसान Trick:

Past Perfect = काम पूरा हुआ

Past Perfect Continuous = काम कितने समय से चल रहा था

Past Perfect Continuous + Past Simple

यह combination बहुत common है।

जब कोई activity Past में कुछ समय से चल रही थी और उसके बाद दूसरा Past event हुआ, तो हम अक्सर:

Past Perfect Continuous + Past Simple

का इस्तेमाल करते हैं।

Examples:

I had been studying for two hours when my friend called me.

मैं दो घंटे से पढ़ रहा था जब मेरे friend ने मुझे call किया।

She had been cooking for an hour when the guests arrived.

वह एक घंटे से खाना बना रही थी जब guests आए।

They had been playing football for two hours when it started raining.

वे दो घंटे से football खेल रहे थे जब बारिश शुरू हुई।

एक बहुत आसान Trick

Past Perfect Continuous को याद रखने का सबसे आसान तरीका:

HAD BEEN + V4

जहाँ:

Had been = Past में लगातार चल रही activity

और

V4 = Verb + ing

जैसे:

work → working
study → studying
play → playing
wait → waiting
learn → learning
practice → practicing

Example:

I had been practicing English for three months.

मैं तीन महीने से English की practice कर रहा था।

Common Mistakes in Past Perfect Continuous

अब कुछ ऐसी mistakes देखते हैं जो students अक्सर करते हैं।

❌ Mistake 1:

I had been study for two hours.

✅ Correct:

I had been studying for two hours.

क्योंकि had been के बाद V-ing आएगा।

❌ Mistake 2:

She has been working since morning.

अगर हम Past की situation बता रहे हैं, तो यहाँ has been नहीं आएगा।

✅ Correct:

She had been working since morning.

❌ Mistake 3:

I had been working since two hours.

यहाँ duration है, इसलिए for आएगा।

✅ Correct:

I had been working for two hours.

❌ Mistake 4:

I had been working for Monday.

Monday एक starting point है, इसलिए since आएगा।

✅ Correct:

I had been working since Monday.

❌ Mistake 5:

He had been worked for two hours.

यहाँ worked नहीं, working आएगा।

✅ Correct:

He had been working for two hours.

एक बार पूरा Tense जल्दी से revise कर लेते हैं:

याद रखिए:

Had + V3 → Result / Completion

Had been + V-ing → Duration / Continuous Activity

The Golden Rule of Past Perfect Continuous ⭐

अगर आपको sentence में यह idea मिल रहा है:

“Past में कोई काम कुछ समय से लगातार चल रहा था”

तो तुरंत याद कीजिए:

HAD BEEN + V-ING

और अगर duration बतानी है, तो:

FOR + Duration

या

SINCE + Starting Point

Example:

I had been learning English for six months before I joined the course.

मैं course join करने से पहले छह महीने से English सीख रहा था।

यही Past Perfect Continuous का core concept है।

Conclusion

Past Perfect Continuous Tense शुरुआत में थोड़ा confusing लग सकता है, लेकिन अगर आप सिर्फ तीन चीज़ें याद रख लें, तो इसे आसानी से समझ सकते हैं:

1️⃣ Had been + V-ing

2️⃣ For = Duration

3️⃣ Since = Starting Point

और सबसे important बात — Tense सिर्फ grammar याद करने से नहीं आता, बल्कि उसे बोलने की practice करने से आता है।

इसलिए अपने daily life के examples बनाइए और उन्हें English में बोलने की कोशिश कीजिए।

For example:

I had been studying for two hours before my friend called me.

I had been waiting for thirty minutes before the bus arrived.

She had been working since morning before she took a break.

इन sentences को सिर्फ पढ़िए नहीं — बोलकर practice कीजिए।
