Note: sth means something while sb means somebody. One’s is replaced with a possessive pronoun such as your, my, his, her, etc.

1. cover one’s track

– conceal one’s whereabouts, activities, intentions

– छिपकर काम करना

No one knows much about where he’s been—he’s very good at covering his tracks

2. a sacred crow

– sth that people did not like to question, a taboo subject

-कोई रीति रिवाज़ या संस्था जिसकी खुले तोर पर आलोचना वर्जित हो

the judiciary remains a sacred crow, despite increasing evidence that serious mistakes have been made.

3. get cracking (or going)

-hurry up also, start working

-तुरंत जुटना

We’ve no time to waste, so let’s get cracking.

4. on the crest of wave

– be very successful so that many good things happen very quickly

-शिखर पर पहुंचना

 Mrs. Singh is still riding the crest of a wave of popularity.

5. shed(weep) crocodile tears

-show sadness that is not sincere

-नकली आंसू, घड़ियाली आंसू बहाना , दिखावा करना

Politicians shed crocodile tears over the plight of the unemployed

6. come a copper

– come to ruin, fail

-आधे मुँह गिरना, बर्बाद होना

The only monetary metal produced domestically was copper.

7. keep one’s fingers crossed

-hope that things happen in the way you want to

-चाहत पूरी होने की इच्छा रखना

Helen will soon find out whether she got into law school; in the meantime, she is keeping her fingers crossed.”
