Note: sth means something while sb means somebody. One’s is replaced with a possessive pronoun such as your, my, his, her, etc.
1. have/hold all the aces
– be in a winning position
– विजय की स्थिति में होना
In a situation like this, it’s the big companies that hold all the aces.
2. ad hoc
– for the special purpose, impromptu
– कुछ विशेष समय के लिए, कुछ समय के लिए
Problems were solved on an ad hoc basis.
3. high on the/sb’s agenda
– if a subject or plan is at the top of sb’s agenda, it is the most important thing they want to discuss or deal with
– अत्यंत महत्वपुर्ण होना
America’s most horrific racist organization, the Ku Klux Klan, began with gun control at the very top of its agenda.
4. alma mater
– the college or school that one attended
– शिक्षा संस्थान
It’s ten years since I left Alma Mater.
5. cast aspersions on
– criticize sb or sb’s character, to talk negatively about someone or something
– किसी के चरित्र की आलोचना करना
I don’t permit to cast aspersions on my friend.
6. lead sb astray
– cause someone to make a mistake
– गलत राह दिखाना
The boy was led astray by bad companions.
7. the avant-garde
– the artists/writers/musicians etc, of any period whose work is very modern and very different from what has been done before
– कला के क्षेत्र में अग्रगामी
He was an enthusiast for the avant-garde.
