Note: sth means something while sb means somebody. One’s is replaced with a possessive pronoun such as your, my, his, her, etc.

1. give-and-take

– compromise; concession

-आपसी समझ बुझ रखना

Marriage is a give-and-take relationship.

2. give as good as one gets

– return in kind, retaliate

अच्छे से वापस देना, अच्छे से जवाब देना

It is impolite not to reciprocate; One should give as good as one gets.

3. go against the grain

– act contrary to a person’s wishes or feelings

-प्रकृति के विरुद्ध होना, इछाओ के विपरीत होना

 I often have to make decisions that go against the grain .

4. take sb/sth for granted

– underestimate the value of sb or sth, expect sb to be available all the time

-युहीं लेना, ज्यादा मायने न देना

I took it for granted that I would find the perfect job.

5. grin and bear it

-accept an unpleasant or difficult situation

कष्ट को हस्ते खेलते सहन करना

There was no alternative but to grin and bear it.

6. come to grips with sth

– try to understand

-किसी समस्या को समझने और सुलझाने की कोशिश करना

The president has failed to come to grips with the two most important social issues of our time.

7. suit sb down to the ground

-find sth convenient, thoroughly,completely

-आसानी से कर पाना

 Part-time work would suit me right down to the ground.
