Note: sth means something while sb means somebody. One’s is replaced with a possessive pronoun such as your, my, his, her, etc.

1. put the cart before the horse

do things in the wrong order or sequence

– सही तरीके से न करना

To get married first and then get a job is putting the cart before the horse.

2. build castles in the air

– make plans and hopes that have very little chance of happening

– हवाई किले बनाना

We are trying to build castles in the air.

3. fight like a cat and dog

– argue violently all the time

– जानी दुश्मनो की तरह लड़ना

As kids, we used to fight like cats and dogs.

4. let the cat out of the bag

– give away a secret

– रहस्य बताना

 I let the cat out of the bag with only one day to go.

5. play cat and mouse with

– trifle with, toy with, confuse sb

 – उलझन पैदा करना

Coy girls often like to play cat and mouse with Boys.

6. put the cat among the pigeons

– do or say sth that causes trouble and makes a lot of people angry or worry

– दूसरों को मुसीबत में डालना

The new security guard is a burglar — that’ll put the cat among the pigeons.

7. a catch-22 situation

– a situation in which one cannot win

– ऐसे हालत जिसमे जीत संभव न हो

I can’t get a job because I haven’t got anywhere to live but I can’t afford a place to live until I get a job-it’s a catch-22 situation.
